Family Tree for the Salits (UK)

Thanks to Judy for sending this diagram of the family tree of the UK branches of the Salit family, which was forwarded to her from an acquaintance from Hull.

Notes (from Davnob):
* Ruben Joseph Salit was married to Rachel (Keila) - they were Grandma Davidson's parents.
* They had five children. Apart from Melach (Miller), Annie, and Jack who all came to the UK, there were also Tevye and Sorretel who remained in Lithuania (Vilna and Kovno respectively - now Vilnius and Kaunas).
* The names of the Davidson/Davidovitz's are as given in the 1911 census

Dr.Emilia Salit-Aleksandrowicz (1901 - 1982)

This is Dr.Emilia Salit-Aleksandrowicz
(the cousin of Joe, Moishe, Sophie, Lammie, Geoffie, Edie, Minnie, Cyril and Lionel)
The daughter of Tevye Salit (Grandma's brother) she grew up in Vilna (now Vilnius) and trained as a doctor.
In 1939 she married Daniel Aleksandrowicz.
When the Vilna Ghetto was set up by the Nazis she worked to prevent the spread of infectious diseases
(the Nazis used the fear of typhus etc as an excuse for rounding up Jews and sending them to the death camps).
When the ghetto was liquidated in 1943 she was sent to Kaiserwald, the AEG slave-labour camp at Riga. By sheer chutzpah and determination she managed to set up semi-clandestine medical facilities there. Despite a series of dramatic events she survived the war and became an Oncologist in Poland and later in Israel.
More details and extracts from her memoir will be posted on Danob soon.

Colin Davidovitz z"l

Davnob is very sad to announce that Colin Davidovitz has died at the age of just 91 (yesterday was his birthday). Colin was the second of Uncle Lammie’s three children. He worked for many years in television, and it was at STV that he met Catherine, to whom he was married for fifty years (she died in 2009). They had four children and seven grandchildren, and he lived to see four great-grand-children. After retiring from TV-AM in 1993, he entered politics and served as a Conservative Councillor for nearly twenty years, eventually becoming Chairman of Hampshire County Council.

For a family as large and disparate as ours it can be difficult to keep contact, but Colin was one of those people who did, and it was great seeing him at family events and reunions over the years. For the ‘Davnob generation’ he was for many years our oldest cousin.  In 2018 he started to write a fascinating account of his life, that was eventually published in Davnob. (The link is  here). Davnob wishes his whole family ‘a long life’ and condolences and warm wishes.  (see messages below from Judy Frankel and Clive and Wendy Noble).

Judy Frankel writes: I’m so very sorry to learn this sad news.  Colin was a particularly likeable and remarkable person with an exceptional and distinguished career at different times in his life in so many different fields.  I’m sure he will be deeply missed by everyone who knew him.

Clive and Wendy Noble write: Ahh, so sad but 91 is a good age... we had a couple of great days with lots of chatting and reminiscing when Colin made a visit to Israel in 2018.  Here we are at the Baha'i Gardens in Haifa.  Love to all the family.

Mazal Tov to Emma and Paul - and Ziggy of course

A warm welcome to the latest Davnob - Theo Noble (aka Teddy). Davnob was delighted to hear from proud & delighted grandparents, Joan and Steve, that Theodore Frank Noble arrived safely today to delighted parents Emma and Paul and baby brother Ziggy.

To be called Teddy by his family and friends. Much excitement and fanfare with ample balloons awaiting him home.

Hull 1899

This is a copy of the wedding certificate of Avram Haim Davidovitz and Annie Salit (here written as Salat; elsewhere Uncle Melakh, Annie's brother, spelt it as Sallett).

A few things to note.  1/ Avram Haim used Hyman as his English name.  2/  We believe that Annie's name was originally Hannah.  Records from Vilnius show that her brother Tevel (Tevye) had a daughter (b. 1900) called Anna - and it is unusual for a child to be named after a living relative. But it is likely that the girl's Hebrew name would also be Hannah - so no evidence there. 3/ Avram Haim's father's name was (as in the birth certificate posted yesterday) Leoric, and he is described as a farmer. 4/ Annie's father is named as Ruben Joseph, as confirmed in Tevye's records. (His name is sometimes Lithuanian/Russianised into Ruvel.

Where it all began - documentary evidence

Today's trawl through the archive finally rediscovered the original photocopy of what we presume is Grandfather Avram Haim Davidovitz's birth certificate (still 'presume' because Lionel did not think it was him - and the full debate is on-line in the history section). I got this from the Ciechanow records in Poland in 2004.

We have a rough translation below, but if anyone knows a Russian translator who can give a more  accurate rendering, in particular of the place names, it would be very helpful.  Tomorrow I will post his wedding certificate from Hull in 1899.

No. 125 the village of Krazh. It took place in the town of Tsekhanov in the year of 1868 on the first day of July at nine o'clock after midnight. Leorek Davidovich came in person, a worker living in the village of Krazh, 23 years old, in the presence of shkolniki (interpreter comments: this is translated as schoolchildren from the Russian) Abram Vontroby, 53 years old, and Gershon Totengreber, 31 years old, living in the town of Tsekhanov, to present us a baby,a male, born in the village of Krazh on the twenty second day of June this year at four o'clock after midnight by

his wife Estera Elka, maiden name Kats,26 years old. When the religious ritual was being performed the baby was given the name of Abram Khaim. This akt was signed by us and the witnesses after it had been read. The father cannot write.

Sinatures: Abram Vantroba, Gershon Totengreber

Schneider, Ziggie, Sophie, Moishe, Dorrie and Joe. (Not sure who are the other couple). Behind Sophie, Rosie and Gertie. Second, Uncle Lammie - wartime photo in Royal Navy uniform.
